The Courtyard is Complete!
We want to thank everyone who took part in this enormous project, whether by helping us build, donating tools or supplies, helping to catch goldfish, or sending funds--together we make a difference!
Thank you...
We're planning to tear down and replace the perimeter fencing around Abby's Goose Run, The Gate House and The Gardens in the spring of 2015.
During this next rebuilding effort all of our ducks and geese will need to reside in half the pen space. For this reason, we will not be able to take in any new guests (unless we have prearranged homes for them) until the work is complete.
Thank you for your understanding and please keep those donations coming, so we can keep working!
Pancreatitis
Inflammation of the pancreas is referred to as pancreatitis. Acute pancreatitis occurs when the digestive enzymes it produces become active while still inside the pancreas—irritating and potentially damaging itself. In acute cases, symptoms appear suddenly and often last for days. Chronic cases are usually the result of abdominal injury, with symptoms developing gradually. Other causes of pancreatitis may include: high calcium levels, genetic predisposition, infection and pancreatic cancer.
Some symptoms of pancreatitis may include: excessive panting (indicative of abdominal pain), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and seizures.
If left untreated pancreatitis can result in malnutrition, infection, diabetes, kidney failure, respiratory issues, pancreatic cysts and cancer. Take your duck to the vet right away for a comprehensive avian blood panel, x-rays and possibly an ultrasound.
Pancreatitis can be agonizing, which means some good pain medication will definitely be in order. Pancreatic enzymes (pancrezyme) can be prescribed by your vet and added to your duck’s food to help them pre-digest their meals.
Some serving adjustments will need to be instituted in order for this therapy to be effective:
1. Your duck will need to be served their meals individually rather than relying on a 24/7 feeding system.
2. Add a small amount of water to your duck’s food and then stir in the appropriate, vet-prescribed amount of pancrezyme powder.
3. Allow the mixture to sit for 15-20 minutes and then serve.
If your duck disproves of the flavor and refuses to eat, ask your vet about utilizing tablets before meals instead.
Some additional dietary changes may also be in order. Ducks with pancreatitis shouldn’t be fed layer or breeder formula feed or be given calcium additives, which can all induce seizures. High fat feed formulas (growing formulas) are also not ideal for ducks with pancreatitis.
