Majestic Farewells...

Sheena...  You made morning the BEST time of the day with all of your happy quacking... and then you made the afternoons the BEST time of the day with all of your happy quacking... and then you made the evenings the BEST time of the day with all of your happy quacking... You are so missed by the world... So missed...

It came to be top of the evening for you, Laddy boy... The one who never gave us any trouble... So innocent and sweet... You are missed... The way your toes gripped onto the Earth... May they grip onto the Heavens...

Losing Sheena...

For those of you who don't follow us on social media, we have a terrible announcement. Not only did we lose our 14 year-old Laddy boy to cancer, but we also lost our beloved Sheena.

Apparently, a carpenter bee crawled into her feathers to keep warm, sometime after she went into her duck house at midnight. When she began to stir in the morning, it became trapped and she succumbed to anaphylactic shock from mutliple stings.

Kim immediately discovered Sheena upon doing morning rounds and found the trapped carpenter bee in her feathers while attempting to save her, but Sheena passed away quickly and quietly in her arms.

Bee stings are very rare and normally, when dealing with less venomous and aggressive species, they are entirely treatable, which is what makes this loss all the more painful...

Excerpt from the Ultimate Pet Duck (and Goose) Guidebooks:

Some symptoms of a bee sting may include:  localized swelling, discomfort (limping if stung on the feet, or blinking if stung around the face or eye).

If your duck gets stung by a bee, inspect the area carefully to make sure the stinger isn’t still lodged in their skin. If so, take your duck to a well-lit area and remove it with a pair of tweezers. Next, dab the area with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide solution on a cotton ball and take your duck to the vet.

If the area begins to swell and your vet office is closed, you can put a tiny dot of Benadryl® Original Strength ointment over the sting site (keeping very clear of their eye if they’ve been stung on the face). Ideally, you want to use this cream very sparingly.

If swelling continues over the course of the next 1-2 hours and you still have no access to a vet, you can administer one dose of Children’s Benadryl® Allergy oral suspension in the dose of 2.2 ml per kg (or 1 ml per lb). Again, this should only be used in an emergency situation when your vet isn’t readily available and only in the case of healthy, adult ducks. Keep in mind, that you’re doing this at your duck’s own risk and that it is NOT guaranteed to be effective (or necessarily safe since you’re using it off-label). As soon as your vet office opens, bring your duck in for an immediate exam and proper medical treatment—and be sure to tell them about any medications you’ve administered before consulting with them.
